Full Moon of Werewolves Schedule

About today’s guest: Bonnie Vanak

Bonnie lives in sunny Florida. Well, when they’re not having a conga line of hurricanes chugging along, slamming them. Bonnie is the author of Egyptian historicals for Dorchester, and paranormals for Silhouette Nocturne.

And one lucky commenter will win a copy of Bonnie Vanak’s The Empath, the Nocturne in which Katia and Baylor first appear. Just leave a comment on this post to be entered. Winner will be announced at end of Full Moon promotion. Last day to enter Saturday, March 25th at midnight central U.S. time.

My name is Baylor Devereux. I’m a Draicon, a werewolf. I live in a pack, dress in designer clothing, and carry out orders given by our leader, Damian. I would fight to the death to protect the pack. I’m not the alpha. Dai is. When Damian is gone, Nicolas is in charge and I give my loyalty to him as I would to Damian.

But just because I’m not the leader, it doesn’t mean I’m soft.

I’m a vicious fighter, a ferocious, yet tender lover, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Katia, the one I love. Although most Draicon search for their destined mates, I’m unique because I lost my destined mate in childhood, just like Katia did. Our story appears in Broken Souls, a story in Nocturne’s new Midnight Cravings anthology. You can read an excerpt below.

So if you happen to run into me in the woods of northern New Mexico when silvery moonlight splashes through the pinyon and pine trees, beware. I may not be alpha, but when it comes to protecting my pack and those I love, I’m just as dangerous as any alpha. I’ll be watching you.

Excerpt from BROKEN SOULS by Bonnie Vanak

Hot breath heaving from his nostrils fogged the cool night air as he ran, closing the distance between them. Baylor bolted forward, cutting her off. He growled low in his throat, nudged her backward, toward the lodge.

Katia sidestepped him, trotting deeper into the woods.

Baylor raced after her, and leapt. He pinned her to the ground with his muscled weight. Forcing her into a submissive position, he gently clamped down on the back of her neck. Not enough to hurt, but enough pressure to get his point across.

Tail lowered, Katia whined softly. He climbed off, nudged her again toward the lodge. When she resisted, trying to dodge him, he nipped her flank.

Each time she tried to pass, he did the same. Suddenly a group of muscled, aggressive wolves raced into the clearing.

The pack males.

Nicolas, the largest, regarded the scene, clearly assessing the situation. He went to the nearest oak and sniffed, and issued a growl low in his throat.

Then he raced off into the woods, the other males following.

Baylor went to the oak. The strong scent of Morph flooded his nostrils. Male possessiveness twined with the need to protect his own. Snarling, he lifted his leg and erased the scent by covering it.

Try getting to her, you bastard, and I’ll rip your throat out. She’s mine.

He herded Katia back to the lodge. At the back door, they both shifted back and entered, grabbing terrycloth robes from a bin near the entrance. Katia climbed the steps as he followed. Inside her room, she shot him an icy glare.

“Why the hell were you thinking?” Baylor fisted his hands. “Damnit Katia, that was a fool thing to do.”

“You condemn me for doing what you once did when you went after your own twin?”

He closed his eyes. “No. I just want to prevent you from making the same mistake I did. Your father is not what you think.”

“And if I could reverse the evil inside him, would you trust him enough to go with us?”

A heavy weight compressed his chest. “You know I could not. I’d have to stay here.”

Katia fell silent as Baylor paced her room. Finally, Nicolas entered, his jaw tensed.

“We captured him and locked him up in the old shed in silver chains. The one where we found you.” He looked directly at Katia. “He’s still in wolf form and weakened.”

The wild hope flaring on her face deeply troubled Baylor. “If he’s weakened, it’s from the white light spell. It wasn’t strong enough, but the full spell is.”

“I’m giving you one day before I let Baylor at him to finish him off, only because he’s your father.”

“He can change, I can find the good inside him,” Katia cried out.

“And I’m the Good Fairy,” Nicolas grated out. “One day, Katia.”

The door slammed behind him. Katia went to the French doors. Baylor raced there first, closed them. “You’re staying here.”

“You’ll have to chain me up to stop me from going to him.”

“Fine.”

Baylor tugged off the belt fastening his robe. He tied one end to the bedpost in a knot and chanted magick words in a low voice. Understanding dawned in her eyes, and she tried to bolt, but he easily caught her, and looped the other end around her wrist.

His knot was secure, leaving enough slack as to not cut off her circulation.

When he returned, wearing the thick glove and the bracelet Nicolas had given him, she still sat on the bed. Baylor untied her. “I’m sorry sweetheart, but I have to do this,” he said quietly. The sterling silver bracelet clicked onto her slim wrist like a manacle.

A soft cry fled her lips as she tugged at it. Baylor tugged his glove off, his heart twisting at the panic squeezing her face.

“You told Nicolas about the blood spell… please, Baylor, get it off!”

“I can’t. You know Damian’s rules. You have to wear it for the next two weeks, no matter what. You’re free to go wherever you want, but the bracelet stays on.”

He brushed her lips against her temple, but she jerked away. The stamp of deep hurt in her eyes sliced him like a hot knife across his flesh.

She turned away. “Get out of here. I don’t even want to look at you.”

Emotion squeezed his throat. Baylor fisted his hands. “Katia, this is to keep you safe, not just as punishment. I’d never hurt you. Ever.”

As he went to close the door behind him, he heard her soft reply.

“But you already have.”

    Bonnie,

I love Silhouette Nocturnes, but have not had the good fortune of reading yours. I shall have to get a copy of Midnight Cravings with yours and Lori’s story. I have read other stories by 2 of the authors from that anthology—Karen wolf stories and Michele’s ‘From the Dark.’ This anthology is a great compilation of authors. I’ll look forward to reading Broken Souls.
