Tis the season…

For all kinds of yummy things and I am determined to stop the ever creeping poundage. I have my annual doctor’s visit in December each year–such a lovely time to confront your annual weight gain. Ugh! So, I am looking for ways to feel festive and full without packing on more pounds.

Did you know a mini pumpkin chocolate chip muffin has only 34 calories? Not bad. Did you know if you freeze them to discourage yourself from eating five a day (170 calories) they are just as tasty? Yes it is true.

How about Eggnog? Any other addicts? I discovered two years ago that I adore the stuff. Usually I buy the “diet” kind and cut it with skim milk, but this year I am going to hit it harder. I am going to try and make my own. Hopefully, I won’t die of salmonella. Here’s the recipe I’m going to try–with modifications. I modify everything. In this case, I think it needs cinnamon.

Anybody have any other great holiday calorie saving tricks? I hate fudge so that’s one plus in my corner. I am dying for some real pecan pie though. Can you believe I went to two family gatherings over Thanksgiving where pie was served and there wasn’t a pecan pie in sight. What is the world coming too?

Thinking thin!

On schedule…

I sat down today to figure out where all my time goes. If possible I seem to go through time even more quickly than money. Being a smart girl, I figured this couldn’t be that hard to figure out and fix. So, I sat down with Excel and did a lovely spreadsheet. (There is very little that can’t be solved with a good spreadsheet analysis IMO.)

Anyway, I have no clue where my time has been going, but I now know exactly how much time I have to play with –not much. I’m using five minutes of my travel time to pick up my daughter at the bus stop right now to chat with you. This is technically promotion time. Double Billing!! How great is that?

In case you think I am totally insane, rather than the normal writer state of just mildly neurotic, I do have a goal for this. I would like to have time for 1.) my family, 2.) writing, 3.) myself/excercise and 4.) household duties without winding up rocking in a corner–there is no time in my schedule for corner rocking.

So, how do you spend your time?

The Good Side to Googling…

You knew Googling is a sport, right? Anyway, I don’t do it much anymore, but every now and then I have to check it out. Look what I found today:

I’ve been translated!!

And some nice ladies in California are recommending me along with Jennifer Crusie and Carly Phillips. :) Scroll down to Diana Looks at Romance section.

I went through twenty odd pages of links about moi (scary) and there wasn’t a bad mention in the bunch. That’s nice.

Have a great weekend!!

p.s. Major CONGRATS to my friend Kathy Steffen who just sold her first book to Medallion. YeeHaw!!!!!

It’s cold…and I’m cheap…

Okay, the thermostat in my house read 63 degrees yesterday–I had to do it—I had to break down and turn on the heat. 63 in the middle of the day, that’s just too cold, isn’t it? I mean how many layers can I wear and be able to wobble around at all?
I’ve already been doing a fair imitation of my dad in the seventies. “Who left the light on in here?” “Close the door, you’re letting the cold in!” I have even been known to pee in the dark. I mean, you know where everything is, right?
So, how about you? With the gloom and doom warnings about this winter’s heating costs, what are you doing to prepare?

I’m addicted…

To VH1 reality TV.

I know. That is embarrassing, isn’t it? But don’t knock it till you try it.

It started innocently enough with Kept the story of Jerry Hall looking for a young American man to be her “kept” man. I mean, who could resist that? Then there was Strip Search–the search for male strippers to star in a Las Vegas version of The Thunder Down Under. Great for research. But now it’s gone past that. I’ve discovered: Tommy Lee (goes to college), Gene Simmon’s rock school (Gene goes to a private school in Britain where he teaches a class on being a rock star), and Celebrity Fit Club (hey, it’s inspirational). I have even glanced at Hogan Knows Best and The Surreal Life (okay, this last one is pushing it even for a reality TV junkee like me.

So, am I the only one? You know admitting your problem is the first step. But really, how else can we make it until the fall when the real schedule begins. Yeah, I’m already planning: American Idol, Survivor, America’s Next Top Model, and oh, so many more…Forget raking leaves! This is the best part of fall. :)

Gotta go–there’s something new on TV

Okay, that’s it…

At least I think that’s it. I think I’m home for awhile. This has been WAY too busy of a summer!

This is where I’ve been this last few days. Since I have small children, I didn’t do any of the wild rides, but I still had a great time lounging around.

In writing news, I finished two synopses that I have sent to my agent. I like the second one better–hopefully she will agree. My husband loves it, which is probably a bad sign. Anyway, I’m trying something slightly new lately–various forms of chick lit. I think it is a good fit for me. I like reading chick lit and I like writing in the first person. (not that everything will be in the first person.) I have one proposal for a hen lit finished and the two synopses I have done are paranormal chick lit. They are a lot of fun. I just hope other people think so too. ;-)

In the blogging world, just want to say how sorry I am for what Paperback Writer is going through. Enough said.

Once I settle back down, I may revisit what I learned at the RWA Conference (Not touching the awards ceremony mess, except to say I was not offended by it and am still not offended by it.) or I may give an overview of A First Draft in 30 Days. Karen Weisner is speaking on it at my local RWA meeting this Saturday.

Oh, I almost forgot. My friend, Chris Merrill won the Golden Heart–had I mentioned that yet? She’s the one they forgot to announce when they were reading the finalists. Ha! Showed them–she won the darn thing. (big grin) Here’s a picture.

National…

It was great. It really, really was. I feel like I learned a ton. Not about writing so much, but the about business of writing and about myself.

I met most of the other Romance Unleashed authors which was absolutely fabulous. It is amazing how close you can get to people over the Internet. My husband was really impressed with how wonderful they all are too.

I met my agent in person and chatted with my editor at Zebra for quite a while. I also, of course, met a lot of other romance writers–both pubbed and unpubbed.

I didn’t go to a lot of the general session panels, but I did attend Samatha Saxon’s panel on “What not to Write” based on Alfred Hitchcock’s work. I love that kind of stuff and really think at some point I will use some of the information. Once I dig out, I’ll share a bit of what I learned with you. I also went to Stephanie Bond’s presentation on “10 career mistakes and how to recover from them”. It was very timely as I think I will be using some of her advice in the very near future. I’ll post more on that later too.

There are separate sessions for Pan members and I went to most of those. The one on numbers once again pounded in how obsessed we writers are with them and how little the ones most of us have easy access to (Amazon, Ingrams and Bookscan) mean. For instance according to the numbers these women get from their publishers Bookscan only accounts for 25% or less of their sales–Wal-mart and grocery stores are that big! One NY Times author said Wal-mart sells more of her books than all of the major booksellers combined. Think about that for awhile.

There was also a panel by two women from Rodale press revealing the results of a survey they had done. It was interesting, but I think, like all surveys, the data could be twisted. For example they asked people what caused them to buy a book. The quality of the writing was number one, while book covers and titles were really low. Okay, that is what people SAY, but really, we know covers and titles are key. Let’s face it the quality of the writing doesn’t make you pick up the book–you don’t even know the quality of the writing until after you read the book. Assuming you aren’t buying because it is an author you know, or because of a review (neither of which was a top, top reason) the cover is what sucks you in. After that other factors become the deciding factor. There was also a question asking about their favorite romance subgenre that caused a bunch of comments. Historicals ranked very highly and when broken down further, American-set historicals were at the top of the smaller list. But what wasn’t clear was how the question was asked. It very well may have been worded in a way that the readers answered based on years of reading rather than say the last five books they purchased. This kind of thing can really change the results of a survey.

On more general terms, the hotel was nice, the food good and reasonably priced. My only complaint with the accomodations was the lack of seating in the bar. You had to be a little predatory about gathering chairs for your group–but that was a small thing and I would say the location was a grand success. Good job RWA!

Till later.

Lori

Edited to add. Here is a short version of Stephanie Bond’s presentation. :)

No laptop…

At this point in time, I’m not planning on lugging my laptop to Reno. I thought about it, but it is one of the bigger ones–so darn heavy and the hotel charges an extra $10 a day for Internet access in your room. Pooey on them.

I am, though, taking my digital camera and may try and sneak time on the lobby computer–assuming they have one and don’t charge me to use it. Ya think I can play craps or something and get free Internet time instead of drinks?

If not, I’ll at least have pics to post when I get back. :)

Right now my schedule looks something like this: Arrive Tuesday around 7. Get to hotel and down to bar by 9 to meet with Debs/Romance Unleashed partners in crime. Wednesday breakfast with same outlaw gang, then off to Virginia City with hubby, back for literacy signing and RWAonline party. :) Thursday, I haven’t decided yet–panels or hanging out with hubby? I am planning on attending the RWA General Meeting–could be a good time this year–don’tcha think? That night hubby and I are going to the Trident Media party, and maybe more time with Debs after that. Friday–pure panels (moderating one at 4:30), then dinner with hubby and Debs. Saturday, more panels, meeting with my agent, and finally cheering Sandy Blair on for the Ritas and WisRWA GH finalist: Chris Merrill, Kathryn Albright, Kelle Riley, and Beth Watson. Lots of fun! Oh, and then the dawn patrol to the airport Sunday a.m. :)

Talk at you when I get back–unless I find a way to do it earlier. ;-)
