Today is my first day of 30 Days of Vampires. The event is in honor of my first published vampire tale, The Vampire Who Stole Christmas in the Holiday With A Vampire II
anthology for Silhouette Nocturne. For the next thirty days I will have prizes, interviews, excerpts and essays all on vampires. The full schedule is here. It’s still a work in progress, new authors continue to check in.
There is one grand prize of $100 or so worth of vampire books and stuff up for grabs–featuring many of the fine books you’re going to read about here in the next 30 days. (contest ends Thursday, December 11th at midnight) To enter you just need to comment. You can comment as much as you want, one comment per post will be counted as an entry. There will also be some daily prizes so keep an eye out for those. (Prizes shipped to U.S. addresses only)
So, check back every day for new vampire fun, and to kick things off– a link to a free download of Dracula by Bram Stoker, compliments of Project Gutenburg. How many of you have already read it? How do modern tales compare?
Then later today, a second post, an interview with paranormal romance author, Kerrelynn Sparks. Stop back by after noon central time for that! And thanks for stopping by 30 Days of Vampires!!

I’ve been looking forward to your 30 Days of Vampires countdown!
by Laura November 12th, 2008 at 7:16 amYeahhhhh its finally hear 30 days of vampires. I am so excited.
by sara hurt November 12th, 2008 at 7:40 amI can’t wait! This is so exciting.
To answer your question; nothing compares to the original.
As I said on another blog, Dracula set the rules–ie no crosses, no holy water, no reflection in the mirror and he can be out during the day–and then Hollywood and Anne Rice ruined all of that.
Modern romance writers haven’t been that bad, but it would be nice to see–even if I have to write it myself–some of Stoker’s rules come back.
by Lou Gagliardi November 12th, 2008 at 8:37 amIt’s here!
Lori…thanks for the link to Dracula! I don’t think I’ve read it since I was a teenager.

But now i do love the Modern day autor’s like, J.R. Ward ,Christine Feehan, + yourself Lori Devoti, etc. And i wouldn’t trade them for the world lol !!! So have a great day/night !! ~smile~ -Elora-
by Elora November 12th, 2008 at 9:44 amCongrats on your upcoming release and the 30 Days of Vampires Blog Bash!
Sounds like it’s going to be great. I’m just sad that we can’t participate if we’re in Canada.
The good news is that I’ll be getting your book because I subscribe to Nocturne.
by Sidhe Vicious November 12th, 2008 at 10:01 amI’ve read DRACULA a number of times! Love it! Love Bram Stoker!
And I also love Kerrelyn’s books! I’m looking forward to her interview here.
Great countdown, Lori!
by Kim Lenox November 12th, 2008 at 10:02 amOh this is going to be fun!
by Colleen November 12th, 2008 at 10:11 amI’m so glad your vampire extravaganza is finally here!
I remember (years ago) seeing “The Fearless Vampire Killers” on tv. I ran out and got Bram Stoker’s book the next day. Loved it, been hooked on vampires ever since, and really enjoy the modern take, of the tortured, evil-streaked hero.
Looking forward to your next 30 days of great, blood-sucking times!
by Kathy November 12th, 2008 at 10:20 amVampires and Christmas!!!! I love it. I must admit that I have never read Dracula.
by flip November 12th, 2008 at 10:41 amHi Lori,
by Mel K. November 12th, 2008 at 10:45 amThis sounds like so much fun! I’m really excited about it! I Have read “Dracula”.
I find that some modern tales cut it and some don’t. It’s that simple.
Thanks everyone for stopping by! So far as prizes I put U.S. only to cover for authors who might not want to ship outside the U.S., but some of the individual prizes will be up for shipping anywhere, and some U.S. and Canada. Just check the individual days….I’m going to go edit the schedule page…
by Lori November 12th, 2008 at 10:47 amLori
Hi Lori! I checked the schedule today – what a great line-up you have for this event! I can’t wait to read everyone’s blogs.
Kerrelyn Sparks happens to be one of my favorite authors, so I will definitely be back to read her interview this afternoon.
AND, I cannot wait to read Holiday With a Vampire!!
by Jennifer A. Ray November 12th, 2008 at 10:50 amThis is going to be a fun 30 days, congrats on the release!
by Teresa W. November 12th, 2008 at 10:54 amThis 30 days of Vampires should be lots of fun. They are my favorite paranormal creatures.
I have read Dracula and it doesn’t compare with books of today in the sense that it is a classic book with a tone that is not seen nowadays.

by Deidre November 12th, 2008 at 11:17 amYay, it’s here! Vamps rule!
I read Dracula for the first time a couple of years back and really enjoyed it. Actually, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It’s obviously dated in its tone and perspective but I daresay that no one who loves vamps can afford not to read what pretty much started it all, even though there were books about vampires published before Dracula. Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla” and John Polidori’s “The Vampyre”.
by Jenna Reynolds November 12th, 2008 at 11:41 amI’m so glad that Wild about Books pointed me to your blog! I’m working on a paranormal romance book list for my library system! I read a ton, but have done multiple lists before so I’m hoping your countdown will give me new authors to read and add to the list!
by Latricia November 12th, 2008 at 11:57 amWoo Hoo! Thanks Lori, for letting me know about the Canada/US subject.
by Sidhe Vicious November 12th, 2008 at 12:22 pmThis is going to be fun, love all those vamps.
by Pam P November 12th, 2008 at 12:58 pmThis is most certainly going to be an interesting month of interviews. I am looking forward to reading each one as they come out.
by Dianna Fryer November 12th, 2008 at 1:21 pmOh, Boy! Does this sound like my kind of contest. Woohoo! $100.00 worth of free vampire stuff. Have I died and gone to heaven?
by Carolyn O November 12th, 2008 at 2:05 pmDublin City Public Libraries are using Dracula as their One City One Book next April.
by Deirdre T November 12th, 2008 at 2:32 pmThanks for the link, Lori. I read Dracula back in high school, which was a very long time ago, lol, and just added the download to my ebook reader.
by Cathy M November 12th, 2008 at 3:39 pmHi Lori!
Congrats on your upcoming release! I’ll be grabbing it to complete my Holiday With a Vampire collection.
I have to agree, nothing beats the original Dracula. It’d be kinda refreshing to see the old rules make a comeback since we’ve been away from it so long and had so many variations. Maybe I can play with that in my next work!
Looking forward to the 30 Days of Vampires!
by Rae Lori November 12th, 2008 at 5:33 pmThis looks fun. I heard about this one Jennifer Ray’s blog & Wild on books. I will definitely be checking in daily.
by Greta November 12th, 2008 at 8:44 pmI was just looking for a good vampire book to start today, too :) This sounds like fun!
by BookSpot November 12th, 2008 at 9:10 pmI read Bram Stoker’s Dracula for the first time the summer after I graduated with my Bachelor’s in English. I love that book. It creeped me out more than any modern vampire tale I’ve read. Dracula himself just seemed so malevolent in comparison to the majority of vampire characters written now. It’s still one of my favorite reads around Halloween.
by Karin November 12th, 2008 at 9:33 pm30 days of vampires!! Sounds like it will be a blast!! I have loved vampires since I was a little kid so I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say about vampires.
by annalisa November 12th, 2008 at 9:43 pmI just got a new copy od Dracula. Can’t wait to reread it.
by Stacie McClellan November 12th, 2008 at 9:56 pmSounds like a great fun-filled 30 days!!!

Oh the 30 Days of Vampires sounds fun.
by Carmen R November 13th, 2008 at 2:21 amCongrats on your release!!
I just read Dracula this past year and absolutely loved it. I don’t think anything can compaire to the original. It is definitely on my reread list – however, I don’t think it will affect me as much as it did the first time I read it – LOL.
by Kara November 13th, 2008 at 9:00 amOh, I love vampires. How exciting!
I have NOT read Dracula…yett! I know it’s awful, but I swear i do plan on it. I’ve wanted too for awhile now. :)

Holiday with a Vampire sounds great. I cant wait to find a copy and read it.
by Donna November 13th, 2008 at 12:59 pmCongrats Lori on your first Vampire book. I think Vampire books are so different now because of the added paranormal in a lot of the stories. Your cover is really great too.

by Pan Zareta November 15th, 2008 at 10:36 amI’ve read it a few times, and once pretty recently! It’s definitely scarier than more modern vamps! Great contest :)
by Brooke November 17th, 2008 at 1:03 pmIt’s been awhile since I read Dracula, but I remember being pleasantly surprised. It would be fun to reread it now that I’ve read Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian.
by Kimberly B. November 17th, 2008 at 11:54 pmI also would like to read the Polidori story The Vampire, as I’ve heard that he patterned his vampire after Lord Byron, in essence establishing the stereotypical vampire look.
