I also try to work on very different things, rather than, say, three vampire stories simulatenously. The benefit is that I find switching between genres and concepts keeps my thinking fresh. You're halfway done and I have another book to do before I can even start on my Vampire novella. I'm one of the bouncers you mention above -- I often flesh out and submit proposals while in the middle of writing or editing other books. The approval process is soooooo long, I like to have several proposals in the pipeline.
