Like Mad Cow and E. coli weren’t bad enough, now we learn a number of hogs (destined for your Sunday dinner, not Fido’s bowl) were fed that lovely melamine tainted pet food.
Disturbing? You betcha.
The FDA (who, according to CNN, is so understaffed they are able to inspect only 1% of our food supply) is at work though–want to know what they’re looking at so you can mark it off your grocery list? Nothing much just:
vegetable proteins…imported…to make everything from pizza dough to infant formula, and protein shakes to energy bars. The ingredient list includes wheat gluten, corn gluten, corn meal, soy protein and rice bran.
Oh, yeah, and all those hogs…
Uh, okay. So, what’s for dinner?
I mean seriously–I already have the handy dandy mercury and pesticides level chart for fish. Now I have to worry about the safe level of rat poison and a substance people used to make dishes out of (not put in their Sunday dishes)? And Aunt Jemima knows what else? Soon, you’re not going to be able to plan a snack, much less a meal without consulting some database of safe foods. Maybe they should change the food pyramid to include these staples. Base: Safe to eat once a week. Middle: Only if not nursing, pregnant or ever planning on becoming pregnant. Top: Make my day deadly.
So, what’s for dinner? I don’t know–but don’t be surprised when the next time you’re at the drive thru they ask–”You want insurance with that?”

p.s. Update–sounds like it may be chickens too. Here’s another link. 6,000 hogs!
