Another skinny icon bites the burger…

Marcia Brady is fat. Again with the shocker. Now Marcia was more my sister’s age–so not quite as disturbing as Valerie B. But STILL!!

In case you missed it, Maureen McCormick, the actress who played Marcia Brady in the Brady Bunch, is now one of the celebrities on Celebrity Fit Club. Just like Valerie, the outfit they showed her in in the first episode really made her look a lot bigger than she was. (Note: If you have hips, do not, allow me to repeat, do not, wear pleats. Especially a pleated skirt with pleats ALLLLL the way around.) In her close-fitting gym clothes she looked better. But still, she isn’t the skinny little thing she was in the 70’s.

Sigh.

What’s for dinner?

Like Mad Cow and E. coli weren’t bad enough, now we learn a number of hogs (destined for your Sunday dinner, not Fido’s bowl) were fed that lovely melamine tainted pet food.

Disturbing? You betcha.

The FDA (who, according to CNN, is so understaffed they are able to inspect only 1% of our food supply) is at work though–want to know what they’re looking at so you can mark it off your grocery list? Nothing much just:

vegetable proteins…imported…to make everything from pizza dough to infant formula, and protein shakes to energy bars. The ingredient list includes wheat gluten, corn gluten, corn meal, soy protein and rice bran.

Oh, yeah, and all those hogs…

Uh, okay. So, what’s for dinner?

I mean seriously–I already have the handy dandy mercury and pesticides level chart for fish. Now I have to worry about the safe level of rat poison and a substance people used to make dishes out of (not put in their Sunday dishes)? And Aunt Jemima knows what else? Soon, you’re not going to be able to plan a snack, much less a meal without consulting some database of safe foods. Maybe they should change the food pyramid to include these staples. Base: Safe to eat once a week. Middle: Only if not nursing, pregnant or ever planning on becoming pregnant. Top: Make my day deadly.

So, what’s for dinner? I don’t know–but don’t be surprised when the next time you’re at the drive thru they ask–”You want insurance with that?”

Lori

p.s. Update–sounds like it may be chickens too. Here’s another link. 6,000 hogs!

Top Pick!!

So, I haven’t seen it myself yet, but a friend who has already received the June issue of RT passed on the news that Unbound got a top pick from Romantic Times Magazine. Since this was my first dark sexy book, this is especially happy news. Here’s the blurb…

“Lori Devoti’s UNBOUND (4 1/2) delivers a truly unique, fast-paced and sexy adventure. Risk is so hot that you’ll be using the book to fan yourself as you read!”–Romantic Times Magazine, Alexandra Kay

Gotta love the “so hot” part–don’t cha?

Lori

Oh, and p.s. FINALLY got my lap top all up and running with a new bigger hard drive and Vista. Let me just say all the rumors flying around about not being able to run any of your old programs in Vista is a bunch of hooey. I even have Write Way running fine. And, yes, the older versions of Word, etc. seem fine too. You do have to use “compatibility mode” to run somethings, but it isn’t a big deal. And I don’t understand everyone getting their you know whats in a bunch over it. Microsoft is trying to improve things…it wasn’t like they could put out the word “hey, we’re going to make things better in a few years. Would all of you other people rewrite your programs to work so they’re ready then?” Nope, somebody had to be first—and they thought about it enough to have a way for you to run the old programs. I think that’s a good thing.

Okay, done with the mini-rant. I got a top pick! :)

My baby is home!!

That’s right, my laptop has been returned to me. It isn’t completely up and running, but I am at least able to use it to surf the Internet and check email. And it came back with a nice big hard drive and a zippy new speed. Wow! I am tres happy–or will be once all my programs are loaded back on. I have done NO writing (a little plotting though) because it would be just too big a pain to transfer everything–and it just didn’t feel right. You know? I was able to finish my edits for Guardian’s Keep and send it off last week–3 months ahead of deadline. So, I was not a total slug.

Anyway, my plan is to get started Monday. Sunday I’m going to a plotting party with a few friends–then Monday (assuming the DH gets everything back on my laptop) I’ll be ready to dive in.

Till later…

First review and books!

That’s right I officially have two boxes of Unbound in my possesion. Pretty darn wild. And I found my first review…

Here’s a snip…

“Based on Scandinavian legends, UNBOUND is an exciting romantic fantasy. Lori Devoti is terrific at creating characters that readers will empathize with especially Risk, a being in bondage who has to endure all forms of tortures and obey a power hungry malevolent being. The witch is evil personified and more wicked than the “wicked witch of the west”; she insures readers will enjoy hating her. The audience will demand a sequel starring Risk’s son.” –Harriet Klausner

Are you a joiner?

Lately I’ve been giving thought to what groups I’m a member of and what if anything I get out of each one. It is really easy to overload yourself with Yahoo loops, etc. I left two groups because I just didn’t feel “a part”–you know?

Now I’m looking at some others. In the process I’ve realized something about myself. I’m kind of a joiner–but I have real issues with being told what I have to do. I’ve been this way since I was four (probably birth, but I don’t remember that ). Little things make this issue of mine raise its ugly head-like list rules. When I was a child it was being told I “had” to clean my room when I had planned on doing it all along. Stubborn little me would then decide cleaning my room was about the last darn thing I was going to do that day.

On loops it’s things like…Tag lines should only be three lines long. Clip your replies. Here are the list of topics you can not post on. You HAVE to be here, or do this. Blah. Blah. Blah.

Stupid thing is, I frequently agree with the rules (and if was asked–not told–would do them voluntarily), but some horrible little demon in me comes out when someone makes it a dictate. I have left groups because of it–I mean seriously, sometimes you do not have control over how Yahoo chooses to break your tag line, and is that extra line of white space going to totally ruin someone else’s day?

On the other hand–it is annoying when you are on digest to have to wade through old messages because someone else on digest forgot to clip and resent the whole darn thing.

But the scolding? Please. In general I believe, almost all the “rules” and “have tos” should instead be suggestions. The rules that really seem to rub, are the ones to protect me from myself. I’m a grown up. Let me worry about my own annoying self.

So, there you have it, I’m a joiner who doesn’t like living under the contraints of other’s rules. Guess I need to either get that issue under control–or quit the joining.

How about you? Are you a joiner? Do you like the rules or bristle under them?

This is so wrong…

Am I the only one WAY disturbed by the fact that Valerie Bertinelli is fat? This is just wrong. If you don’t believe me or haven’t seen it for yourself–here’s a link to the Jenny Craig commercial.

This is the girl every other girl wanted to be. Now she’s just one of us–the aging masses. It’s so strangely upsetting…

Pirated…

So, some blogger pirated my daughter’s Easter drawing from a couple years ago…Click here. Seems tacky to me. I could take the art down, or put something obnoxious like my book cover in it’s place with the same file name…

Whatcha think? Guess from now on I need to make sure she put’s a copyright on her stuff–who knew? ;)

On other fronts, I’ve been AWOL. Spent spring break in southern Missouri–which was thankfully a lot warmer than Wisconsin. Came home to no laptop. Mine is off getting a new bigger hard drive, mainly because my husband is SURE I need Vista. I mean, I don’t want to get “behind”.

So I find myself wrestling for computer time with my two children (one of them is the egg draw-er). How sad is that?
