covers

A friend and I were discussing the new trend to faceless covers the other day. They are really popular right now. Then when updating my links I came across two versions of Crystal Green’s The Huntress. What do you think?
The Huntress no face The Huntress face
Which would you be more likely to pick up?

  1. Probably the first one. I like the faceless cover more.

  2. I have to say the first one…leaves more to the reader’s imagination when covers are faceless.

  3. I’d go with the first one as well. I’m all for the faceless covers.

The second one almost looks like she’s trying to peek down under the cover.

  4. Hi — I came across your journal through, well, Googling myself (because what else does a new author do after her book comes out?), and I thought I’d weigh in on the cover issue, since as you’ve seen, Doppelganger is sort of in the faceless-book trend. The original mockup for the cover showed the woman from head to toe, and it really threw me when I got the finalized version — I actually thought part of the image had gotten cut off. My editor told me that was considered more “edgy.” I have to admit I was a little dubious of that, but it’s interesting to see all three comments so far vote for the first one. Granted, my cover shows about as much as the second one, but it’s also got a lot of shadow going on. So it’s good to know that the faceless approach isn’t just a crazy notion of the marketing department; it does appeal to readers.

  5. Well, I agree with everyone–I much prefer the faceless one. The one showing the face kind of set me back for some reason.
And, Marie, welcome to the neurotic world of self-googling. It gets better. You’ll be down to once an hour before you know it. Thanks, for commenting!
Oh, and I’m going on vacation in about a week–not that I’m counting down–and I just decided today to take your book and Patricia Briggs. I’m really looking forward to both of them. I have a doppleganger character in a WIP–although I may not use the term…

  6. Lori,

I’ve been limiting myself to no more often than once per day. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the book!

  7. I prefer the first one too. The smile on the face of the second one is more of a smirk.
