A few things…

First, I came across something on the Internet the other day–I won’t go into a bunch of description so as to protect the not-so-innocent–but You Can’t Copyright What You Didn’t Create!! That’s right. Someone out there has slapped their copyright on something that is definitely not their original work. Now they aren’t claiming they wrote it really. What they have done is work it up for a handout–but it is something very much just taken from somewhere else (a very well known and used source) without so much as a little creative rewriting. I don’t know why this bugs me–but it does. I mean I don’t think very many people will think this person wrote it, and I don’t think that was even the person’s intent, but still–if you are going to slap a copyright on something at least go to the effort to change it someway first. I have no problem whatsoever with using someone else’s material as a resource–or really even handing out something commonly used (so probably no longer holding a copyright) but to put your own on there just seems tacky. My apologies for my little rant.

Also, while I have be doing a HORRIBLE job of keeping my “Currently Reading” pick updated, I am reading. I am always reading. Lately, I’ve been reading Passageby Connie Willis. It is a very long book, so I’ll be at it for a while anyway. It is really good–and quite intriguing. I’m still not sure where she is going with it, which is just one fact that keeps me going. Basic storyline is about a woman researching near death experiences (or NDEs as they are termed in the book). It is a tad creepy with all kinds of imagery that parrellels the dream state or NDEs. I haven’t decided how much of that is a message…hmm… Anyway, even at only around the halfway point I definitely recommend it. :)

Other news-hubby got a new job, which meant new insurance, new doctors, everything, and at the same time our bank decided to eliminate the type of checking account we had. So, I have been busy resetting up everything–fun, fun, fun. There was a time I thrived on change–I still do somewhat, but let’s face it sitting on hold waiting for someone to tell you, “no, you aren’t in our system” is not an exciting time.

On the lines of change I did color my hair–red, as in RED. I think I like it. If I ever get a day where I go to the effort to slap on make-up I’ll snap a picture and post it.

Till next time!!

Because none of us have enough time…

For the really important questions. Here is the answer to one I’m sure is haunting you this time of year. What your dog should be for Halloween.

Articles…

Harlequin, ebooks and libraries…

Harlequin has entered into an agreement with Overdrive to offer downloadable versions of their books available through libraries. Just thought it was an interesting new thing. :) Here’s the article.

Chick Lit and Million Dollar Advances…

The author of The Devil Wears Prada got a million dollar advance for her second book. I thought this article was an interesting look at the publishing business.

Yahoo Digitizing Too, but Kinder, Gentler…

On the lines of Google’s much criticized Google Print program, Yahoo is jumping on board too–but keeping things more limited. Article.

Blue Moon…

I hear you calling my name…

Recognize the tune, or am I revealing that I spent way too much time listening to my parent’s records growing up?

Anyway, I just finished Blue Moon by Lori Handeland. Now normally, I don’t pimp books here, but this one was really good, and certainly worth your time to pick up.

I bought this book mainly because Lori is also a member of WisRWA and the book is set in Wisconsin. I did not buy it because it is about werewolves. In fact that was a mark against it in my book. I’ve read a few werewolf romances that were WAY to close to doggie love for me, but Blue Moon was different.

First, it almost wasn’t a romance. If it wasn’t marketed as a romance, and hadn’t won the Rita, I’d call it more of mystery. Sure there is romance in there–and plenty o’ sex, but for me the mystery element was much more the driving force of the story.

Second (and this was important to me) no doggie sex. ;-)

And finally, it was just really well written. I did know who the bad guy was –but I don’t think it was obvious to everyone. I have probably just spent too much time living with dogs/wolf cousins. And that is one thing I really liked–she told us who the bad guy was, but it was couched in wolf speak. Loved that.

So, if you want to try something new. Buy Blue Moon. Now, I’m going to add the second book in the series to my wish list–in case, you were wondering what to get me for Christmas. ;-)
